Braving the Elements

Braving the Elements

Braving the Elements is a new docu-drama anthology series revealing the work, subculture and characters of professions exposed to the elements and impacted by the weather.

Lights Out, June

When severe weather knocks out power and it's "lights out!" it's the linemen to the rescue! Winter ice storms, spring tornadoes, summer thunderstorms — they are all a part of life for the power crews of Entergy Arkansas. They are the first ones in after an extreme weather event and they usually face dangerous working conditions. These men are the modern day cavalry who come to save the day when storms have created havoc for communities. In addition to helping the people of Little Rock, the crews travel as far as Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas if they get the call.

Turbine Cowboys, April

Mother Nature is a powerful force and taming her is nearly impossible. Wind turbine workers risk their lives building maintaining, and repairing these monolithic, modern day windmills — the wind turbines. We follow two teams: the would-be "wind techs" from their hardcore boot camp training through their first year in the field, and the seasoned veterans who are still challenged every day. They all face extreme weather, dizzying heights, and possible electrocution. We find out who is attracted to this job and why and follow them as they push the envelope to wrestle electricity from the wind.

Iceberg Hunters, August

Each spring the Arctic Circle releases skyscraper-sized icebergs that flow into the Northern Atlantic where they come into contact with human civilization. The world's most densely packaged gathering of icebergs is off the coast of Newfoundland. Called "Iceberg Alley", it's avoided at all costs by everyone except for a little known group of brave "iceberg hunters" who attack and destroy them for the purpose of gathering the world's purest frozen water and bringing it back to land.
